7 Signs Your AC May Break Down This Summer

7 Signs Your AC May Break Down This Summer

Summer on Long Island has a way of exposing problems in an air conditioning system very quickly.

One day your home feels cool and comfortable. The next day your system seems to be running constantly, certain rooms feel warmer than others, and the temperature on the thermostat never quite matches how the house actually feels.

For many homeowners in Massapequa, Seaford, and Wantagh, AC problems do not suddenly appear out of nowhere. Most systems give warning signs before a major breakdown happens. The challenge is that many people do not realize what they are seeing until they are sitting in a hot house during a ninety degree week waiting for emergency service.

At Absolute Air & Power, we often find that homeowners noticed small changes weeks before the actual breakdown happened. Strange sounds. Higher electric bills. Weak airflow. Little things that did not seem urgent at the time.

Knowing what to look for can help you avoid a complete system failure during the hottest part of the summer.

Why Summer Is Hard On Air Conditioning Systems On Long Island

Summer places the highest demand on your AC system all year long.

Homes throughout Massapequa, Seaford, Wantagh, Bellmore, and surrounding Long Island communities deal with long periods of heat, humidity, and constant system operation. Your air conditioner can spend hours running with very little downtime.

Many local homes also have additional factors that put stress on cooling systems, including:

  • Older Ductwork
  • Limited attic insulation
  • Second floors that trap heat
  • Salt air exposure in coastal areas
  • Aging equipment

When systems already have underlying issues, summer often becomes the breaking point.

Sign #1: Your AC Is Running But Your Home Is Not Cooling

This is one of the most common warning signs homeowners notice.

Maybe your thermostat says seventy two degrees, but the house still feels warm and uncomfortable. Perhaps your AC never shuts off but the temperature barely changes.

Several issues could cause this:

Low Refrigerant Levels

If refrigerant levels drop because of a leak, your system struggles to remove heat properly.

Absolute Air & Power did an outstanding job on the installation of my replacement air conditioning system. We have been using them for over 10 years. Tom and his team were great to work with. The technicians were professional, worked efficiently, and made sure everything was cleaned up before they left. Tom took the time to answer all my questions. Highly recommend Absolute Air & Power for anyone looking for quality workmanship and reliable service.

A day after we closed on our house at the end of June, our central air unit crashed out. I called Tom that afternoon and he came first thing the next morning. Although not great news having to buy an entirely new central air system, Tom and his team made it happen in less than 5 days - not to mention during a heat wave! Couldn’t recommend them enough, will definitely be using them for future mishaps!

I am beyond happy with the service I received from Tom and his team at Absolute Air & Power! From the first call I made to set up an estimate, to the estimate, to installation today everything was great! Everyone was professional, worked as a well oiled team and installed central air and a split in my basement. They arrived at 8am and by 3pm, everything was cleaned up and my house was nice and cool! My only regret is not calling them sooner!!

I have been using Absolute Air and Power for over 10 years for both my AC and Heating needs. Their yearly service plan is extremely reasonable and worthwhile to keep your system in tip top shape for all the seasons. I've had a new AC system recently installed by Tom and his team -again the work was extremely professional. Working with Tom, his son, team and office managers is a pleasure, and I would highly recommend AAP to anyone with concerns of working with a trustworthy professional HVAC service.

Responsive, reliable and most of all everything was high quality. I needed a new central air unit and furnace and from the initial appt to the installation, my entire experience exceeded expectations. I don’t highly recommend many companies but this one “absolutely” earned it.

I want to thank Absolute Air and Power for servicing my AC unit today. They went above and beyond helping me, especially want to thank Samantha who actually went to pick up the part and Tom who installed it. Thank you so much!

Dirty Evaporator Coils

Dust and debris can reduce heat transfer and make your system work much harder.

Restricted Airflow

Blocked filters or duct issues can prevent cool air from circulating correctly.

Ignoring this problem often causes additional wear because your system keeps running longer and harder than necessary.

Sign #2: Weak Airflow Coming From Vents

Walk around your home and pay attention to the airflow coming from each vent.

If some rooms feel comfortable while others barely receive air, there may be an issue developing.

Weak airflow can happen because of:

  • Clogged air filters
  • Blower motor issues
  • Duct leaks
  • Damaged ductwork
  • Blocked vents

We see this often in two story homes around Wantagh and Seaford where upstairs rooms already struggle with heat buildup.

Sign #3: Your Electric Bill Suddenly Increased

A lot of homeowners first notice an AC issue when opening their utility bill.

If your usage habits have not changed but your bill suddenly jumped, your system could be losing efficiency.

An AC system that is struggling has to work harder to deliver the same amount of cooling.

Common causes include:

Older equipment naturally becomes less efficient over time, but sudden spikes should never be ignored.

Sign #4: Strange Sounds Coming From The System

Air conditioners make normal operating sounds, but new or unusual noises often indicate trouble.

Banging Sounds

Loose or damaged internal parts can create banging noises.

Screeching Sounds

Motor bearings or belt problems can sometimes produce high pitched sounds.

Buzzing Sounds

Electrical issues, failing capacitors, or loose components may create buzzing noises.

A system rarely becomes quieter as problems get worse.

Sign #5: Water Around Your Indoor Unit

Water around your AC system is never something to ignore.

Many homeowners assume condensation is normal, but standing water often points toward:

  • Clogged condensate drain lines
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Drain pan problems
  • Excess moisture buildup

Long Island humidity can increase moisture production during the summer, making drainage issues more noticeable.

Sign #6: Your AC Keeps Turning On And Off

Short cycling happens when your system starts and stops repeatedly instead of completing full cooling cycles.

This creates several problems.

Your house becomes less comfortable.

Your energy usage increases.

Your equipment experiences additional wear and tear.

Possible causes include:

  • Oversized systems
  • Dirty filters
  • Thermostat issues
  • Electrical problems
  • Refrigerant concerns

Sign #7: Your System Is More Than 10 To 15 Years Old

Age by itself does not automatically mean replacement, but it does increase the chances of breakdowns.

Many systems in homes throughout Massapequa and nearby areas are now reaching the age where repairs become more frequent.

Older systems often experience:

  • Reduced efficiency
  • Harder to find replacement parts
  • Higher repair costs
  • Reduced cooling performance
  • More unexpected failures

If your system is already showing multiple warning signs and repairs are becoming more common, replacement may eventually make more financial sense.

Catching Small Problems Early Can Prevent Bigger Repairs

The most expensive AC breakdowns often start as relatively small issues.

A dirty filter turns into frozen coils.

Weak airflow creates stress on the blower motor.

Low refrigerant forces the system to run continuously.

The longer problems continue, the more likely additional components become affected.

That is why paying attention to early warning signs matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Signs often include weak airflow, warm air coming from vents, unusual sounds, higher electric bills, short cycling, or water around the unit. Many systems provide warning signs before a complete breakdown.

Summer places maximum demand on your system. Existing problems that may not have caused issues during mild weather can become much more noticeable during extreme heat.

It depends on the age of the system, repair frequency, and overall condition. If your AC is older and repairs are becoming common, replacement may provide better long term value.

Yes, dirty filters can reduce airflow, lower efficiency, create frozen coils, and force the system to work harder than it should.

Most systems should be inspected and serviced annually before peak summer temperatures arrive.
